Istanbul with kids

Istanbul is warmer towards children than almost anywhere in Europe. Waiters produce extra bread, shopkeepers hand out sweets, and a crying toddler attracts sympathy rather than irritation. That changes the experience of travelling with small children more than any attraction does.

The city is enormous, and crossing it by road can take an hour for a distance that looks short. The ferries are the answer: they run constantly between the European and Asian sides, cost very little, and a twenty minute crossing with gulls following the boat is one of the better things you can do here with a four year old.

The historic sights are crowded and mostly involve queueing in the sun. One a day is plenty. In the mosques, shoes come off and shoulders are covered, and children are welcome, though small ones tend to find the carpeted quiet more interesting than the architecture.

Practical tips

  • Take the ferry, not the taxiCrossings are frequent and cheap, and they avoid the traffic entirely. The journey is genuinely a highlight rather than a means to an end.
  • One big sight a dayThe queues and the crowds are tiring. Pair a major sight with a park or a ferry rather than stacking two together.
  • Expect to be welcomedChildren are made a fuss of, which is lovely and occasionally overwhelming for a shy child. Worth warning them it will happen.

The parks along the Bosphorus are where local families spend a weekend afternoon, with tea, grass and space to run away from the crowds of the old city.
