Practical tips
- Book the anchor, improvise the restOne booked activity per day is usually enough. Fill the gaps with a bakery, a covered passage or a bookshop, all of which are dry and cost nothing.
- Covered passages are free shelterThe nineteenth century arcades in the second and ninth arrondissements are glass-roofed shortcuts full of odd shops. They work well as a twenty minute break between two bigger stops.
- Check what is closed on the day you goMany French museums close one day a week, commonly Monday or Tuesday, and some smaller places close for lunch. A closed door in the rain is a bad moment with a tired child.
If the rain clears, the parks are the obvious reward. Playgrounds drain quickly and are usually empty for the first hour after a shower, which is the best time to be there.
