The Jacobite Steam Train — Hogwarts ExpressBoard the actual Hogwarts Express. This heritage steam train runs from Fort William to Mallaig and crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct — creating that iconic shot seen in Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire. Runs May to October; book well in advance. One of the great railway journeys in the world.
Glenfinnan Viaduct — Hogwarts ExpressThe most recognisable shot in the HP films: the Hogwarts Express steaming across this 21-arch viaduct above Loch Shiel. Built in 1898, it's 380m long and 31m high. You can see the viaduct from the Glenfinnan Monument visitor area for free, or cross it on the Jacobite Steam Train.
Glencoe — Hagrid's Hut & Hogwarts GroundsThe dramatic valley of Glencoe appeared in Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows Part 2. Hagrid's hut, the bridge to Hogwarts and lake scenes were all filmed here. Known in Scottish history as 'The Glen of Tears'. Free; spectacular in any weather.
Loch Eilt — Hogwarts Grounds & Dumbledore's GraveThis narrow loch in the western Highlands was used for exterior shots of the Hogwarts grounds across multiple films, and the small island at its western end is Dumbledore's grave in Deathly Hallows Part 2. The nearest train station is Lochailort on the Fort William–Mallaig line.
Loch Arkaig — Dragon FlightThe wild, remote Loch Arkaig near Fort William was used for the exterior dragon flight sequence in Deathly Hallows Part 2. In 1746 Jacobite treasures were said to have been hidden here — fittingly mysterious. Accessible by road from Fort William.
Loch Etive — Deathly Hallows CampingThe northern end of this 30km sea loch in Argyll was used for Harry, Hermione and Ron's camping scenes in Deathly Hallows Part 1. Remote and hauntingly beautiful. The name Etive is believed to come from a Gaelic goddess associated with the loch. Nearest town: Taynuilt.
Corrour Station — Hogwarts ExpressThe highest and most remote station on the West Highland Line, Corrour features in Half-Blood Prince for Hogwarts Express shots. 17 miles from the nearest public road and only reachable by train or on foot. A 3-hour train from Glasgow or 51 minutes from Fort William.
Lochaber Rural Complex — Prisoner of AzkabanThe production crew rented this rural complex northeast of Fort William during bad weather in Prisoner of Azkaban filming. Not a tourist site itself, but the nearby Old Inverlochy Castle ruin is well worth a visit — one of the most important castles in Scottish history and scene of two major battles.
